Thanks to those who took the effort to reply a special thank to madmanc...
I am using windows xp - the cable I used is the right (null cable) - the port is a serial COM (the 9 pin one) - the drivers have been all updated and for flashing I tried with Dream up from 3 different sources and different versions - This is the first time I am flashing... so I did not use any other port before - I also checked on the device manager in my computer and everything seems to work.. Any further help will be much appreciated - for any clarification please let me know - with my anticipated appreciation
first of all m8, make sure u have the latest .net framework installed on your pc,
then make sure it is definately a rs232 cable not a null cable
then make sure you have set your com port on your pc to com port 1 that is the best com port to flash with, and make sure dreamup is set to com port 1
then make sure, it is a image for a clone dm500s because i assume u r using a clone version ? if it is a real one then a real dm500s image
then make sure your firewall isnt blocking dreamup or your virus protection programe isnt blocking it,
let me know how u get on m8,

As Madmanc mentioned make sure 500s is switched off when you start running Dreamup. After Dreamup starts you switch box on and Dreamup should find it. It has caught me out a few times.

I thank you for all your efforts - Of course I did not forget Madmanc advice about turning off and on during the process... but the problem is that I am not getting any progress every time I click on connect I get the error message...
You may be right that no body knows it all but it is also difficult to fix something remotely where there are so many possibilities behind it... with my outmost appreciation...

Yes I of course thought of the use of another computer - but will a portable without the 9 pin male outlet or port - how can one use a portable which has only USB's??? should I understand that on the market there are cables with one side the NUL connection (9 pin female) and USB on the other??? when ever you can please comfirm - with my appreciation.
yes you can use the usb port on your laptop portable pc it is a serial adapter cable you need, usb to 9pin male you connect this to your 9pin female to female null modem cable heres one http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-to-serial-9-pin-male-adaptor-29968 but you will find cheaper on a well known buy and sell site

oh another thing - in looking through Device manager (hiden devices) I found out the parport is not working - I read in windows and in fact it is menetioned there that this problem does not affect any function and should be ignored... is this true and could this problem be the origin or the cause of the problem I have with my COM-port1... can any body look at this and revert back please
