The film that does what it says on the tin. Samuel L Jackson plays Neville Flynn, an FBI agent escorting Sean Jones, a witness to a gangland slaying, from Hawaii to Los Angeles. However, gangster Eddie Kim has secreted crates of venomous serpents in the cargo hold and when they're released, all hell breaks loose. The film earned a reputation for the inclusion of plot lines from blogging fans, including one now infamous line. Despite the novel approach to its production, David R Ellis's film is surprisingly well-acted and tense, with both Julianna Margulies as flight attendant Claire Miller and David Koechner as co-pilot Rick receiving a fair share of the cracking dialogue.

But enough nuance remains to bring out the protagonists' characters, driven by both vulnerability and a need to survive.

Newspaper publisher Lord Rawnsley puts up a £10,000 prize for the winner of a flight from London to Paris and soon his daughter Patricia, her would-be husband Richard, his rival for her hand and a motley collection of aviators are gathered, ready for the race to begin. Among them, of course, is the requisite villain, Sir Percy Ware-Armitage, aided by his put-upon servant Courtney.

Director Scott Derrickson's remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic replaces the original's theme of fear of impending nuclear war with contemporary concerns for environmental catastrophe. Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, an alien sent by a confederation of extraterrestrial beings to warn the inhabitants of Earth that the biosphere is on the verge of collapse. Predictably, as soon as he emerges from his spaceship a trigger-happy soldier ignores his instructions and takes a shot at the visitor. The wounded Klaatu asks for access to the United Nations to deliver his message, but the Secretary of Defence, Regina Jackson, instead orders that he should be taken away for further investigations. Aided by friendly scientist Dr Helen Benson, it's not long before Klaatu is able to escape the US government's clutches. But by this time Klaatu has concluded that Earth can only survive if mankind is eradicated.

Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Toro) is an ex-con who has found Jesus but still slips into his old ways. Christina Peck (Naomi Watts) is a happily married suburban wife and mother, until a traumatic event sends her back to her old life of drugs. As their lives are shown in vignettes, Iñárritu slowly brings the strands together in a dramatic climax of tragedy and redemption.
