    Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (Film)
A romantic comedy from director Mark Waters, who also made Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. Matthew McConaughey plays Connor Mead, a womanising bachelor who is returning to the family fold for his brother Paul's wedding. The commitment-phobic singleton has a particularly jaundiced view of love, and thinks nothing of causing chaos on his sibling's big day. But, before too much damage can be done, Connor is visited by the ghost of his late uncle, Wayne, who tells him to expect visitations from spirits intent on putting his love life back on track. And, sure enough, Allison Vandermeersh - his high school lover - materialises and points out how close he and Jenny Perroti - who is also attending the wedding - were back then. But will this spectral jolt be enough to put him right? Will Jenny be even the slightest bit interested after all these years? And what will the Ghosts of Girlfriends Present and Future have to say to the philanderer?

    Benny's Video (Drama)
Austrian director Michael Haneke's chilling drama stars Arno Fisch as Benny, a 14-year-old who fills the void created by the lack of love shown to him by his parents by watching a stream of violent horror movies. The young video freak then uses his own state-of-the-art equipment to record his slaughter of a total stranger, which he then dispassionately shows to his wealthy parents. But, their response to his confession is, in many ways, even more horrific... In German, English, French and Arabic, with English subtitles. Benny's Video kicks off Film4's Extreme season and is introduced by Mark Kermode. The Extreme season screens each night at around 11.00pm, through to Thursday 29 March.
    (Subtitles, 15, 1992)

    Funny Games (Film)
Michael Haneke's American re-make of his 1997 German version loses none of the terror or horror in the translation. An all-American family - George, Ann and son Georgie - arrive at their summer cottage for a yachting holiday. Two polite young men, Paul and Peter introduce themselves as neighbours but suddenly and brutally instil a nihilistic, sadistic regime on the family, playing mind games and torturing them. Haneke famously makes the audience complicit to events, rewinding events, having Paul and Peter address the audience directly and making the violence happen off screen but having it still horribly audible in this claustrophobic nightmare.
    Director: Michael Haneke
Starring: Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt, Brady Corbet, Devon Gearhart, Boyd Gaines
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 18, 2007, 3 Star)

The two children, Nicholas and Anne, are photosensitive and must never be exposed to light, so all curtains and doors are kept firmly shut. Love Exposure (Film)
Writer-director Sono Sion's slightly baffling, extraordinarily odd, epic drama is the frequently comic tale of a quest for redemption and romance in the bustle of modern Japan. It's the story of a teenage boy called Yu, who falls for Yoko, a girl he runs into while working as an 'up-skirt' photographer in an offshoot of the porn industry. His attempts to woo her are complicated by a spot of cross-dressing - which convinces Yoko that she is lesbian - dalliances with kung-fu and crime, and a constant struggle with the guilt that's a legacy of his father's Catholic faith. Yu also has to fend off the affections of Koike, who was, somewhat bizarrely, attracted to him after catching Yu sneaking a snap of her knickers. The film won a raft of awards around the world, including the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival. Tonight's Extreme season screening is introduced by Mark Kermode.
    Director: Shion Sono

Audrey Tautou stars in the title role of Anne Fontaine's biopic of the hugely influential French fashion designer Coco Chanel. Fontaine begins her telling of Gabrielle Chanel's life at the moment she and her sister Adrienne are dropped off, aged around 12 and following their mother's death, at a convent-run orphanage; she continues tracing the Chanel story, as suggested by the title, through to the 1920s, just before Coco becomes the fashion phenomenon she is remembered as today. After their time at the orphanage, the sisters find themselves struggling to make their name as entertainers in a local music hall, where Gabrielle (Tautou) picks up her nickname, Coco. It's also at the music hall that Coco and Adrienne (Marie Gillain) meet the men who will enable them to climb society's rungs, though Coco's general attitude to those around her makes her route more circuitous than her sister's.
